Ex-Wenatchee sex crime detective Bob Perez dies

WENATCHEE  (AP) — The former police detective who led the discredited Wenatchee child sex ring investigation has died.

Bob Perez died last Thursday at Central Washington Hospital, according to the website of Jones and Jones Funeral Home.

His daughter, Michelle Valdez, confirmed his death to The Associated Press.

Perez, of Waterville, was 60 years old.

Perez led the investigation in the mid-1990s that arrested dozens of people who were accused of sexually abusing children. Most of the cases were thrown out or overturned.

One of the central figures in the case, East Wenatchee Pastor Roby Roberson, says he never received an apology.

A retired officer who worked with Perez, Mike Magnotti, said he did his best to serve the community and protect children.
