Fire in Kent apartment walls, floor displaces 8 people

A fire in the floor and walls of a Kent apartment complex left eight people homeless.

A resident heard a smoke or automatic fire alarm and called the fire department shortly after 1 a.m.Sunday at an apartment complex in the 9700 block of south 248th Street in  Kent.

When police and fire arrived, they saw smoke coming from a third-floor apartment and evacuated the building. A fire department spokesman said firefighters had to cut holes in the walls and ceilings of two of the units to find the fire. The fire damaged four units.

The displaced people included six adults and two children who were assisted by the Red Cross. A fire department official said it is likely the families will be able to move into other available apartment units in the same complex.

The cause of the fire and estimate on the damage have not yet been determined.
