A man in a wheelchair was found dead this morning near the corner of 23rd Avenue and East Madison Street, according to a spokesman for the Seattle Fire Department.
A motorist called 911 around 7:40 a.m. to report “a man down” after seeing the man on the sidewalk, said fire spokesman Kyle Moore. It appeared the man had been dead for some time when medics and police arrived, Moore said.
Seattle Police Department spokesman, Jeff Kappel, said employees of nearby businesses thought the 56-year-old man was sleeping. He was sitting in his wheelchair, but was placed on the ground by medics, who pronounced him dead at the scene, he said.
The man does not have a listed address and his death is not considered suspicious, according to Kappel.
A Seattle Times reader, who walked by the scene on her way to work, said the man’s clothing was in tatters, leading her to believe he may have been homeless. His body was found near a Safeway grocery store and across from a bus stop, she said.
