UPDATE: 9 a.m. | A section of Highway 509 near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport that was shut down this morning after a multiple car crash is back open, according to the State Patrol.
A multiple car collision on Highway 509 in SeaTac this morning has left a woman in critical condition and a man in serious condition.
Five, possibly six, cars were involved in the crash just after 5 a.m., which occurred about a half mile north of South 128th Street, said State Patrol Trooper Chris Webb. A car driving east on a roadway above Highway 509 came down an embankment, through bushes and into oncoming traffic. The vehicle rolled onto Highway 509 and was struck by a Mazda heading south.
The Mazda was then struck by three other cars, Webb said.
The man who was driving the Mazda, and his wife, who was in the passenger seat, were taken to Harborview Medical Center where the man was being treated for serious injuries and the woman for critical injuries, Webb said. The driver who struck them took off running but was arrested by the King County Sheriff’ deputies.
“This is a really bizarre scene,” Webb said, adding that investigators are looking into whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.
All lanes of southbound Highway 509 are closed in the area of the crash, Webb said.
