A convicted sex offender who was arrested Sunday morning for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman at Seattle’s Myrtle Edwards Park was released from prison last year after serving time for a Thurston County rape.

Coty Durand Kelly, 25, served prison time for third-degree rape, second-degree assault (strangulation) and fourth-degree assault, all stemming from a 2011 case out of Thurston County.

Seattle police say that Kelly sexually assaulted a woman in the waterfront park Sunday morning.

Several people called 911 around 11:30 a.m. Sunday saying that a man was chasing people in the park.

Officers found the victim when they arrived. Police talked to witnesses and found Kelly in a parking garage near the Seattle Art Museum Sculpture Park.

The Seattle Times is naming Kelly because he has been wanted on a state Department of Corrections (DOC) warrant for failing to report to his community corrections officer.

DOC spokesman Chad Lewis said Kelly was supposed to report on July 2 and failed to do so; he has been under DOC supervision since being released from prison last December.
