Glasses deflect bullet in Rainier Beach drive-by shooting

Police say the bridge of a 16-year-old girl’s glasses deflected a drive-by shooting bullet in Rainier Beach Saturday night, saving her from possibly fatal injuries.

Witnesses say suspects shot from a dark sedan at about 9:40 p.m. into a home  in the 5400 block of South Roxbury Street. Several people, including children, were in the home  when the bullet struck the girl, who was lying on a couch in the living room. Occupants in the home called 911 as the car returned to fire a second round of bullets into the home.

The girl was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries.

Gang unit detectives taking over the investigation believe the house was targeted, but the 16-year-old was not the intended victim. The suspect vehicle has not been located.
