Wednesday Memo: Cougar cold … ‘Drone masters’ … Missing hiker

Brrrr … Early today it was 29 degrees at Sea-Tac Airport, 27 in Tacoma, 26 in Everett, 12 in Spokane, 15 in Wenatchee and Yakima, and the chilly champion of them all: minus-1 in Pullman. With that temp, we’d skip classes at Wazzu today.

Amazon’s delivery-by-drones plan ... Columnist Danny Westneat takes on the company’s proposal (clever PR ploy?) to deliver small packages using bitty drones. He notes that we want to feel we still have some sway over “the drones and the drone masters.” He notes that Google has a corporate slogan, “Don’t Be Evil.” He suggests a new one for Amazon: “Don’t Be Creepy.”

Missing for a week: A Japanese man who may have gone on a hike in the vicinity of Mount St. Helens has been missing since Nov. 27. He’s just 26. Authorities are looking for a couple who may have given the man a ride.

It’s cold here, but up in Bethel, Alaska, people aren’t necessarily dealing with the cold. It’s with musk oxen, of all things. The critters have been spotted near homes, and the State Patrol is warning residents the oxen can move quickly and if you want to see them, be careful. They can be pretty aggressive and easily irritated. Gotcha. (Bethel is 400 air miles northwest of Anchorage and is a gateway to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta region.)
