ROY, Pierce County — A fire chief says a worker is presumed dead after a silo collapsed and spilled tons of corn at a feed mill.
The collapse happened Monday afternoon at the Wilcox Farms mill in Roy, about 50 miles south of Seattle.
South Pierce Fire & Rescue Chief Bob Vellias says the worker in his 50s was one of two men doing routine maintenance on the silo when it gave way for an unknown reason.
The other worker and two people in an office escaped.
Vellias said Tuesday two other silos were damaged in the collapse and are threatening to fall and spill their grain. He says they have to be secured before authorities can recover the man’s body.
Wilcox Farms supplies eggs throughout the Northwest. The family-owned business hasn’t commented on the accident.
