Everett boy, 13, gets 4 years for robberies

EVERETT (AP) — A 13-year-old Everett, Wash., boy has been sentenced to at least four years in juvenile detention for the armed robberies of a bikini espresso stand and a market.

In the espresso stand robbery, police say the then-12-year-old boy rode up on a bike, ordered a drink and pulled out a handgun, threatening to shoot the barista in the leg. Then he dumped the tip jar into his backpack and rode off.

The Daily Herald reports the boy pleaded guilty Tuesday to two counts of first-degree robbery. He says he borrowed the gun from a 16-year-old boy he met through church. That teen was earlier sentenced to two years for a separate armed robbery.

Snohomish County Superior Court Judge Ellen Fair declined a defense request to release the boy to his parents under a plan that would have amounted to house arrest for two years.

The teen’s parents apologized in court for their son’s actions.
