Luge-style skateboarder struck by van at rush hour

A skateboarder who was coasting down Denny Way while lying on his back, feet-first and luge-style, was run over by a shuttle van Thursday, according to Seattle police.

The skateboarder had a broken arm and other minor injuries and was taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment, police said.

According to police, the man was on the sidewalk, headed east and traveling at a good rate of speed at Denny Way and Ninth Avenue around 5 p.m. when he was struck by the shuttle.

Police said the van was also headed east on Denny when he made a right-hand turn.

The skateboarder went under the van and was run over by the right front tire, police said. Officers reported that the van driver said he never saw the skater.
