JBLM soldier charged with aggravated sexual abuse of a child

An Army soldier was federally charged Friday with aggravated sexual abuse of a child after being arrested Tuesday at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Sgt. Joseph T. French, 27, is accused of raping the child over the course of three years and distributing sexual photos of the child online, according to the Washington State Patrol. He was arrested on the base after investigators received a tip from the victim’s mother in Florida.

He remains in detention until his next hearing, according to court documents.

French, from Chipley, Fla., joined the Army in 2004 and deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, according to the 593rd ESC Public Affairs Office. He has been assigned to the 51st Signal Battalion as a multi-channel systems operator since his 2010 arrival at JBLM.

While the charges involve multiple assaults on one victim, anyone whose children had contact with French are asked to contact detectives at 360-704-2410 or mectf@wsp.wa.gov.
