Skier dies after hitting rocks at Stevens Pass

A man died today after apparently hitting some rocks while skiing at Stevens Pass.

Officials did not have details today about whether the man, who was identified only as in his 30s, was doing jumps or just skiing when he hit the rocks, said Lt. Brandon Vargas with the Gold Bar Fire Department.

Fire department crews this morning were dispatched when they were notified that the skier had gone into cardiac arrest from his injuries, Vargas said. Ski-patrol members brought the man off the mountain while performing CPR; they were joined by a medic unit from King County Fire District 50, which also tried to resuscitate the man.

Chelan County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
