Southbound I-5 down to 1 lane in Seattle this weekend

LO Seattle, Wa. February 17, 2014 President's Day traffic was stacked up all over the region. In addition to this backup created by a scheduled repair project on Interstate 5, early in the day all northbound lanes of I-5 were blocked by a fatal accident involving a tanker truck full of hazardous material and both I-90 and Hwy. 2 were closed in both directions at the passes due to weather.

Southbound Interstate 5 will be reduced to one lane between the Washington State Convention Center and Interstate 90 from 9 tonight through 5 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

The closure will allow crews to repair broken-down expansion joints. WSDOT says motorists should expect delays of 45-60 minutes. To avoid delays, WSDOT recommends drivers use Highway 99 or public transit.

At least one lane of southbound I-5 through the construction zone will remain open at all times. Access to and from I-90, Airport Way South, Fourth Avenue South and South Dearborn Street will remain open.

The I-5 express lanes will operate in the southbound direction from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday to alleviate backups and provide drivers with more ramps into downtown Seattle.
