Wednesday Memo: Bertha a lemon? … No texting please … Welcome Chewy

Wouldn’t you know it? Bertha’s big troubles started in Japan with damaged seals. It’s difficult not to compare this to buying a lemon of a car — a very big, expensive one. Let’s hope that any extra costs stemming from these fixes doesn’t come out of our pockets. The way things are set up for the project, they shouldn’t, but you never know.

No texting allowed: The city council in Spokane Valley has banned texting by council members during meetings. The move is to make sure the back and forth among council members is open and transparent to the public. It isn’t a problem in Spokane Valley, according to the story by The Spokesman Review, but you can’t be too safe, eh?

A chase ends in a suicide: A suspected drunken driver being chased by police shot himself after a spike strip ended the chase early this morning on Highway 167 in Auburn. When troopers went up to the man’s car, they found him dead from a self-inflicted wound.

Hello Chewy. No, it’s not Chewbacca. It’s a northern fur seal. He’s new to Seattle and is expected to be available for viewing by visitors to the Seattle Aquarium at 9:30 a.m. today. Chewy, a 12-year old, 260-pound male, is the second northern fur seal to become part of the aquarium’s marine mammal collection.

Weather: It’s going to be partly sunny today with a high of 54. Did you enjoy yesterday’s sunny skies? Don’t get too comfortable, though. Rain is forecast for tomorrow and Friday. National Weather Service forecast
