Confirmed fatalities at mudslide now 21

The number of confirmed fatalities in the massive mudslide in Snohomish County is now at 21, Snohomish County officials said at a news conference today.

In addition, the bodies of four more victims were discovered Sunday at the site of the mudslide.

Until today, the official number of fatalities was at 18.

Jason Biermann, program manager at Snohomish County emergency management, said during the news briefing that 15 victims have been officially identified, and another six are awaiting identification. The four victims discovered Sunday have not been identified.

Biermann said searchers made progress today, but were stopped from searching in one area by large ponds formed by the rainfall. “We’re waiting for those to drain,” he said.

Searchers are also recovering memorabilia and personal items, and decontaminating those items before they are given to the families.
