How to help disaster victims or report those missing

Officials responding to the massive mudslide near Oso, east of Arlington, are providing more specific directions for those with information about people missing or those seeking ways to help.

They are urging people who believe a friend or family member is missing to call the Snohomish County Department of Emergency Management at 425-388-5088.  Officials are trying to consolidate the list of the missing using information reported through the hotline, county Emergency Management Director John Pennington said.

Staff at the hotline can only accept information, not give it out.

The hotline also has been accepting calls from people offering their assistance and are matching resources being offered with community needs.

Meanwhile, the American Red Cross is encouraging people who want to help those impacted by the slide to consider making only financial donations.

Chuck Morrison, regional chapter executive for Northwest Washington, said the organization is not equipped, at this point, to accept in-kind contributions such as clothing and other items, because those could potentially hamper their efforts.

The Red Cross, he said, has hundreds of volunteers responding to the disaster and has begun to recruit additional volunteers from along the West Coast. It has also set up emergency shelters in both Darrington and Arlington for those who have lost their homes.

For additional information, contact the Red Cross at www.redcross.org or call: 800-RED-CROSS (733-2767).
