Seattle native Jimi Hendrix, one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, is the face of the U.S. Postal Service’s newest Forever Stamp, which went on sale today.

The Jimi Hendrix Forever Stamp was dedicated at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, this evening before a celebration concert. The stamp kicks of f the 2014 Music Icon series, which will include Janis Joplin later this year.

The limited-edition stamp, designed by artist Rudy Gutierrez, is a painting of Hendrix as he plays one of his beloved white Fender Stratocaster guitars. He’s wearing his trademark vintage military jacket and his face is surrounded by swirls and icons that reference song lyrics or aspects of his life, including a guitar, mermaid and butterfly.

“I am deeply touched and so are other members of the Hendrix family by the issuance of this stamp, and I wish to thank the United States Postal Service for bestowing one of our nation’s highest honors on my brother Jimi,” his sister Janie Hendrix said in a news release.

Hendrix was born in Seattle in 1942. He taught himself to play guitar when he was a teenager and soon after started playing with bands in the Seattle area. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. Rolling Stone magazine ranks Hendrix No. 1 on its list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

Several memorials in the Seattle area are dedicated to him. Jimi Hendrix Park is located next to the Northwest African American Memorial in the Central District, near where he grew up.
