A scam in which a resident receives a phone call from someone claiming to be in law enforcement who says the resident missed jury duty and must pay to have a warrant “lifted” has made its way to Snohomish County.
The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a woman who reported that a man claiming to be a sheriff’s office lieutenant had called her and said she had an outstanding warrant for missing jury duty. The man told her she would need to purchase a pre-paid credit card and call him back with the account number.
County employees will never request information such as a Social Security number of the phone, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
The scam was recently been reported in Kitsap and Thurston counties. Anyone who believes they may be a fraud victim should call 911.
