A taxicab passenger was killed after a collision with a pickup truck early Tuesday on Highway 167 near Tacoma.The taxi was heading south on Highway 167 just after midnight when a Dodge Ram pickup heading the opposite direction crossed into oncoming lanes. The taxi driver swerved, but was struck by the pickup, according to the State Patrol.
The main point of impact was behind the taxi driver, where authorities say Shanna Huttenstine, 34, of Tacoma, was sitting. Huttenstine, who was identified by the State Patrol, died at the scene. Taxi driver Said Ali, 52, and front seat passenger Jason Speers, 36, suffered non-life threatening injuries, authorities said.
Trooper Guy Gill said that investigators believe the pickup driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
“We did an evaluation on him and we did observe some indicators of impairment,” Gill said. “We did a blood draw this morning, he’ll be booked into jail on (investigation of) one count of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.”
The pickup driver, Anderson Hamilton, 48, of Puyallup, will be evaluated at a local hospital before being booked into the Pierce County Jail, Gill said.
