Driver dies after striking pole in North Seattle

Seattle police say that a man who crashed a minivan into a telephone pole in North Seattle yesterday may have suffered some type of medical emergency before the accident.

Police spokeswoman Renee Witt said in a news release that officers were called to 8th Avenue Northwest, near Northwest 65th Street, after the minivan went over a curb and a planted median and into oncoming traffic. The 2004 Honda Odyssey came to a stop after hitting a telephone pole, she said.

Officers performed CPR on the 62-year-old driver and Seattle Fire Department medics took over when they arrived, Witt said. The driver was taken to Northwest Hospital & Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

“It is believed, but not yet been verified, that the male suffered a medical episode prior to the collision,” Witt wrote.
