A man in Lynden, Whatcom County, who recently resigned as police officer after 34 years with the city’s department was arrested today on suspicion of dealing and possessing child pornography, according to the Washington State Patrol.
The Lynden man allegedly traded images with a 16-year-old girl in Texas, WSP said in a news release. The initial investigation originated after officials discovered images on his city-owned cellphone while conducting an internal administrative investigation. Texas authorities interviewed the girl while detectives from the WSP’s Missing and Exploited Children’s Task Force interviewed the suspect and reviewed digital evidence, which led to his arrest.
The man was taken into custody without incident today and booked into the Skagit County Jail on suspicion of dealing and possession of depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct and viewing of depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
The man had worked with a nonprofit organization based in Kitsap County that combats domestic minor sex trafficking and had received recognition from the Lynden City Council for his service to the city.
