Limited-access road past Highway 530 slide opens at midnight

A 2-mile “primitive” road around the Highway 530 mudslide will be open — one direction at a time — to the public beginning at midnight Monday, according to the state Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

Travis Phelps, WSDOT spokesman, said the opening of the one-lane road is meant to assist local residents, but said drivers will not have to prove they live in the area.

Vehicles using the route will travel behind pilot cars, and no stops will be allowed.  State Patrol troopers will be stationed on each end of the restricted section, Phelps said.

Phelps said caravans will be conducted through the area in the westbound direction every hour on the hour, and eastbound every hour on the half-hour.

The roadway, which has been used by Seattle City Light crews, is part dirt, part gravel and has some asphalt sections.  It runs south of the debris field in the Oso area.

Phelps said the state also has begun work learning what it will take to open Highway 530, but no target date is set, and some significant work on the corridor is likely to be needed before the highway can safely be reconstructed.
