Off-duty SPD officer struck by hit-and-run driver

An off-duty Seattle police officer was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Sodo around 2 p.m. today.

The officer, who has not been identified, was directing traffic for a private company at First Avenue South and South Atlantic Street when he was struck, said police spokeswoman Renee Witt.

Apparently the driver had driven around a line of stopped cars. When the officer ordered the driver to stop, the motorist tried to make a U-turn and while backing up struck the officer; the officer rolled over the top of the motorist’s car, Witt said.

The driver then took off. The officer got up and tried to chase after the motorist, Witt said. The hit-and-run driver stopped a few blocks away and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The officer was taken to Harborview Medical Center for scrapes and bruises, Witt said.
