Saturday Memo: Sun, a fair and winning baseball — a spring weekend doesn’t get much better

Sunny spring weekend: The weather forecast is looking delightfully pleasant. Highs are expected to poke through the 60s Sunday, with clear skies until Tuesday.

If you’re itching to leave town and head across the state, prepare for delays of as long as two hours on I-90 east of Snoqualmie Pass. For two weeks, starting at 10 tonight, work crews will reduce travel to one lane in each direction for a four-mile stretch of the freeway.

Doin’ the (spring) Puyallup: The Spring Fair is now in full swing. See the schedule for livestock shows, kids’ exhibits and horticultural fun. The fair runs through Sunday.

It’s called the “Extreme Scream” for good reason as it rockets (from left) Kari Hutchens, Maddie Russell and Jessica Roberts up 20 stories with three G’s of force on Friday. The ride costs $10, and many who spend the money say it’s the best ride at the Spring Fair in Puyallup. “Your heart drops,” says Russell. (Photo by Alan Berner)

One company’s pain is shoppers’ gain: Idaho-based clothing retailer Coldwater Creek filed for bankruptcy protection with a plan to start going-out-of-business sales right before Mother’s Day.

Fantastic Felix: The Mariners’ ace pitcher wowed Friday, striking out 11 in the Mariners’ 6-4 win over the Oakland A’s. Hernandez now has three wins in three starts, a first in his career. The M’s play the A’s again today at 6:10 p.m. It’s starting to feel like the Sodo Mojo is back — but enough of that, we don’t want to jinx it.

In other sports news, the Emerald Downs season opens today, with the biggest buzz over Stopshoppingdebbie, an undefeated 4-year-old filly. If she keeps winning she might be entered in the Breeders’ Cup.
