Suspect in Bellevue slaying is arrested during traffic stop

Bellevue police arrested a suspect Monday morning in the slaying of a 72-year-old woman whose body was found inside her apartment Sunday night, according to Bellevue police.

The 53-year-old man was booked into the King County Jail on investigation of homicide just after 10 a.m., jail records show. The man, whose criminal history includes convictions for robbery, theft and taking motor vehicles, is currently on active supervision by the state Department of Corrections for a 2011 conviction for taking a motor vehicle, according to court records and a DOC spokeswoman.

At 8:45 p.m. Sunday, police were called to the Twelve Central Square Apartments in downtown Bellevue, in the 10300 block of Northeast 12th Street, said police spokeswoman, Officer Carla Iafrate.

A family member, who hadn’t heard from the woman, went to the apartment complex Sunday evening, grabbed a ladder, entered the woman’s unit, found her body and called 911, Iafrate said. First responders confirmed the death and the possibility the woman died as a result of foul play, she said.

Detectives sealed the apartment and applied for a search warrant, which they executed this morning, Iafrate said. They confirmed the woman died as a result of homicidal violence and called in crime-scene investigators from the State Patrol Crime Lab to process the scene, she said.

Iafrate wouldn’t say what led detectives to connect the suspect to the woman’s homicide, but said the man was arrested during a traffic stop in downtown Bellevue this morning.

“It’s all still under investigation. It’s a very, very new crime scene,” she said.
