Tuesday Memo: Tax day … Taking timber money … Blood moon over Miami

Tax day: Little known secret? If the government owes you money, there’s no penalty for not filing your taxes on time. But, if you owe the IRS money, the penalty is 5 percent for every month or part of a month you’re late. Let’s face it: If you haven’t filed yet, you probably are one of the “owe” people.

Promises, promises: Back in 2008 when Peter Goldmark was campaigning to become state land commissioner, he vowed to never take money from timber companies. But over the past three years, Goldmark has accepted about $100,000 in campaign contributions from timber and wood-product companies, according to a Seattle Times Watchdog analysis.

Mariners find their offense: With temperatures in the 40s and winds swirling in Arlington, Texas, the M’s felt right at home – in a good way. Mike Zunino hit his third home run of the season in the 7-4 win over the Rangers.  “I know we didn’t score a lot of runs,” Zunino said of the recent home stand. “We wanted to come here, relax and swing the bat like we knew how to.”

April showers: If this week is any indication, we’ll have flowers aplenty in May. Rain and more rain is predicted for the rest of the week in the National Weather Service forecast. Clouds in the Northwest blocked our view of the lunar eclipse and the “blood moon” last night, but here’s a look at what we missed. We’ll get another chance to see one in October.
