Warning issued for measles exposure at Sea-Tac airport

A traveler from California with a confirmed case of measles was at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on March 31 and two other Seattle locations the previous day while he was contagious, according to Public Health – Seattle and King County.

The traveler was likely exposed to measles while on the same flight as a person with an earlier confirmed measles case on March 21. Before receiving the diagnosis, the traveler was in West Seattle and Sea-Tac.

Anyone who was at Sea-Tac or the locations listed during the following times was possibly exposed to measles:

Seattle, March 30:

Safeway, 9620 28th Ave. SW, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Marshalls, 2600 Barton St., 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Sea-Tac, March 31:

Terminal B, 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

People present at those locations and the times who are not immune to measles would most likely become sick between last Monday and April 21.

Symptoms include fever, rash, cough and red, watery eyes. Measles is highly contagious from four days before to four days after the rash appears. Measles can be spread through the air when a person with measles coughs or sneezes, even before the person has the characteristic measles rash.

People at highest risk from exposure to measles include those who  are unvaccinated, pregnant women, infants younger than 6 months and people with weakened immune systems.

The case is not related to the possible measles exposure in Seattle and Tacoma on March 28-29, public health officials said.
