Pools around the state will host their annual April Pools Day events on Saturday for families and community members to learn about water safety and enjoy free swim time.
April Pools Day attendees will learn proper life-jacket fitting and use, drowning-prevention strategies and rescue techniques in case of a water emergency at the 25 participating city, county and private pools throughout the state. There will also be free swim time and games at participating pools.
Most events will be held on Saturday, but each local pool will have its own specific dates and times. Participating pools in Seattle are Ballard Pool, Evans Pool, Helene Madison Pool, Meadowbrook Pool, Medgar Evers Pool, Queen Anne Pool, Rainier Beach Pool and Southwest Pool.
Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for children and teens in Washington, according to Public Health – Seattle and King County. There were 112 unintentional drowning deaths of Washington residents in 2012. Of those, 22 were children younger than 18.
