Four people were arrested after a high-speed chase resulted in a crash that snarled northbound Interstate 5 traffic near the Highway 599 exit for two hours Thursday evening.
Tukwila police officers were dispatched to the Southcenter mall about 6:30 p.m. after witnesses reported seeing five males break a car window in a parking lot and then flee. Officers located the suspects’ silver Impala, which headed west on Tukwila Parkway and then north on 61st Avenue South. Officers discontinued the pursuit because the vehicle was speeding. The vehicle then turned west on Southcenter Boulevard into oncoming traffic and struck a vehicle.
The car was driven away from the scene and then headed onto northbound I-5, according to the Tukwila Police Department. Officers caught up with the car after the driver lost control and it flipped. The five men then fled the overturned car.
A Seattle police K-9 unit responded to the scene and assisted officers in locating and arresting four of the five men. Officers also found a firearm in the nearby bushes and three handguns in the car. One of the guns had been reported stolen.
The four suspects were taken to hospitals for injuries sustained during the crash, police said.
Only one lane was open on northbound I-5 near the Highway 599 exit for about two hours. All lanes reopened at 8:45 p.m.
