Drivers will have to detour around westbound Highway 520 for Mother’s Day weekend, so that crews building a new cross-lake bridge can pour up to 30 loads of concrete near the west highrise.
The work is part of the new West Connection Bridge segment, which will link the new floating lanes to the old 520 sometime in 2016. Eventually, the new span will be incorporated into an all-new highway reaching Montlake.
The closure goes from 11 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.
Full closures in both directions are scheduled the weekends of May 31-June 1 and June 7-8.
When the new floating bridge opens in 2016, it will include carpool-transit lanes, as well as a bicycle and pedestrian trail, said Dave Becher, project manager for the Washington State Department of Transportation. “What’s more, it will be structurally safer, replacing a more-than-50-year-old bridge that’s vulnerable to wind and earthquakes,” he said.
