Update at 11:53 a.m.: Investigators have determined the fire at Mount Zion Lutheran Church was caused by smoking materials discarded into a plastic container. The fire did an estimated $300,000 damage.
Original post: A Mountlake Terrace church was heavily damaged in an early morning blaze that left one firefighter with minor injuries, according to fire officials.
Fire investigators have not officially determined the cause of the blaze, but backed off from earlier reports in which they said the cause could be suspicious, according to Snohomish Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes.
“What they thought was suspicious turned out not to be,” she said.
One firefighter suffered minor injuries when he was struck by a piece of falling ceiling, she said. He was taken to the hospital primarily as a precaution, Hynes said.
Hynes said that two large rooms in the Mount Zion Lutheran Church were damaged in the two-alarm fire that had reached 20 feet into the air when fire fighters arrived.
The loss estimate has not yet been calculated.
