NEWHALEM, Whatcom County — The North Cascades National Park Visitor Center opens Saturday, a week before Memorial Day weekend.
The center closes during winter when visitation declines with the annual closure of North Cascades Highway. The rest of the year it is open to the public to provide park information, resources, a natural-history exhibit and special programs with park rangers.
“It’s just a great opportunity to connect to the wilderness that we have all around us, and the stunning scenery,” visitor-center manager Katie Crowley said.
Through the end of June, the center will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
At the end of June, hours will be extended and interactive programming will begin.
The center is across the Skagit River from Highway 20 near milepost 120, adjacent to Newhalem Creek Campground.
