Plan to save Enchanted Valley Chalet seeks comment

OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK (AP) — A plan to temporarily relocate the Enchanted Valley Chalet in Olympic National Park is open for public comment.

KXRO Radio reports the historic building is being undercut by the East Fork of the Quinault River. The National Park Service wants to protect the river from environmental harm, while providing more time to make plans for the area.

The plan calls for moving the chalet this summer, before fall rain and high river flows return. The chalet would be moved about 50 to 100 feet from the banks of the Quinault River and the foundation would be removed.

Park officials believe this action is required to prevent the chalet from collapsing into the river. The move would also allow more time to figure out what to do with the building.
