23 arrests at Paradiso fest at the Gorge over the weekend

The third annual Paradiso Festival at the Gorge Amphitheater during the weekend saw the same number of arrests as last year, mostly for drug offenses, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

Of the 76 calls for service to the Sheriff’s Office, 23 resulted in arrests at the two-day rave fest, which had a sold-out attendance of more than 27,000.

The arrests stemmed from distributing or selling dangerous drugs, including Ecstasy, Molly, methamphetamine and psilocybin mushrooms. Two people were arrested for vandalism.

In 2013, deputies received 87 calls for service and 23 suspects were booked into jail, said the Sheriff’s Office.

Danny Wilde, Gorge general manager, said in a news release that increased crowd-safety measures put in place this year seemed to work well. Those included improving emergency-medical resources and bringing in a physician for the festival.

Wilde noted that compared with last year, the on-site ambulance service made 36.5 percent fewer trips to area hospitals during the event.
