County bans new construction in Oso slide area for 6 months

The Associated Press

EVERETT — The Snohomish County Council has imposed a six-month ban on new construction in the area of the Oso mudslide and to the east of the slide area in a flood zone.

The Daily Herald reports the ban is the first major change in land-use rules since the March 22 slide, which killed 43 people and covered a square mile in dirt and debris.

The building moratorium in the slide area was approved unanimously on Wednesday. The flood-zone ban passed on a vote of 4-to-1.

The bans will need to be renewed if the council wants to extend them beyond December.

The council also is considering more stringent requirements for engineering studies before new construction.

A lobbyist for the Snohomish County-Camano Association of Realtors expects the Legislature will consider a proposal for a statewide landslide risk disclosure law next year.
