Highway repairs slow northbound traffic at Federal Way

 

Traffic is clogging on northbound I-5 this afternoon beneath the Federal Way “triangle” ramps, because of drivers detouring around a Highway 18 repair project.

A new ramp from westbound Highway 18 to southbound I-5 was built just two years ago, but concrete is cracking and chipping at some expansion joints — so contractor Mowat is repairing those spots this weekend under warranty for the state Department of Transportation.

In the state’s announcement, drivers were advised to go from Highway 18 to northbound I-5, then exit at South 320th Street to re-enter southbound there. The merging vehicles to northbound I-5 are adding congestion today. “That’s a heavily trafficked area anyway,” said Harmony Haveman Weinberg, WSDOT spokeswoman.

Traffic maps were showing one to two miles of slowdowns as of 4:37 p.m.
