Rob Blethen has been named general manager of the Yakima Herald-Republic. In his new role, he will have direct responsibility for advertising and circulation.

Blethen, who is currently publisher of the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin, assumes his new duties Aug. 1. Both news organizations are affiliates of The Seattle Times but are managed independently.

“As stewards of a 117-year-old family business, the Blethen family is pleased to have Rob’s impressive newspaper and digital skills put to work in this new role. Rob is a significant part of our family’s transition from fourth- to fifth-generation family business leaders,” said Frank Blethen, publisher and CEO of The Seattle Times. “His commitment to the family’s journalism and public-service stewardship is outstanding and will build on our 24 years of independent service and commitment to Yakima.”
