Scholarship named for SPU hero who stopped shooter

The Associated Press

The president of Seattle Pacific University announced at the school’s graduation ceremony that a scholarship has been named for the hero who stopped a fatal shooting on campus earlier this month.

President Daniel Martin told graduates on Saturday, including Jon Meis, that an engineering scholarship will be given in his honor. Students and their friends and family gave Meis a standing ovation at the ceremony at Key Arena.

Seattle University and local police say Meis tackled a gunman and pepper sprayed him when he stopped to reload a shot gun in a building on campus June 5. One person died and two others were injured in the shooting.

Police say that without the action of Meis and others who held down the gunman, more people likely would have been hurt.
