SPD officer arrested in Snohomish County child-molestation case

A Seattle police officer has been arrested for investigation of first-degree child molestation and communication with a minor for immoral purposes, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.

The officer, a 57-year-old Bothell resident, was arrested today and booked into the Snohomish County Jail. The Sheriff’s Office says he has been a Seattle police officer for more than 20 years.

Jail records show that Eric Amadeo Smith was booked on those charges shortly before noon. Seattle police personnel records show an Eric A. Smith, 57, was hired as an officer in 1983 and has worked as a motorcycle officer since 2002.

The arrest follows an investigation launched on June 18 after allegations were made that the officer had molested a former girlfriend’s daughter on several occasions between 2009 and 2013.  The victim was between the ages of 7 and 11 at the time, the Sheriff’s Office says.

The Police Department confirmed the arrest in a post on the department’s online blotter. The department says the officer was placed on administrative leave on June 18 when the department became aware of the investigation. The post does not name the officer.

We’ll update this post as soon as we have additional information.
