Friday Memo: 5 wildfires … Having a heat wave … Bumper blueberries

Big flames: The state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is fighting five wildfires across the state, with the largest one near Entiat in Chelan County. Dry weather and hot temperatures are contributing to fierce fire conditions.

Speaking of hot: It’s going to be hot today (upper 80s) and it’s going to stay hot (low 90s) into next week, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

A.C. in a glass: Keep cool today and toast the birthday of E.B. White with one of the author’s favorite cocktails, a Pompier. Famous-writer trivia: The author of “Charlotte’s Web” was a reporter for The Seattle Times in the early 1920s.

Bumper crop: Washington is now fourth in the country for growing blueberries, with an expected harvest of 90 million pounds. That’s a lot of berries. And if you’re tired of pancakes and muffins, we’ve got more tasty ideas for blueberries.
