A Seattle police officer shot a 20-year-old man at the scene of a reported burglary early today after police say the man jumped from the roof and began fighting with the officer.
The police responded to a burglary call in the 4000 block of 39th Avenue South, in the Mount Baker neighborhood, about 1:30 a.m. Neighbors had called 911 to report seeing several people with flashlights and crowbars enter a house, police said.
After surrounding the home, officers took two men into custody.
The third, who was on the roof, ignored commands from an officer on the ground, jumped from the roof and began fighting with that officer, according to police. During the struggle, the officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect.
Both the officer and the man who was shot were taken to Harborview Medical Center. At last update the man was in serious condition.
The officer had minor injuries from the fight, and was released from the hospital.
The two men were booked into King County Jail for investigation of residential burglary.
