Employees of a towing company got an unexpected surprise today when they found a pipe bomb in a stolen car that had been impounded, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office said.

The vehicle was recovered on July 18 by deputies, who arrested and booked the driver into jail, the sheriff’s office said. The vehicle was towed and stored at a tow lot 1300 block of Bonneville Avenue in Snohomish.

While inspecting the vehicle today, employees at the impound lot discovered two explosive devices in the trunk of the vehicle. One was a large pipe bomb and the other was described by the sheriff’s office as a smaller explosive device.

The Interagency Bomb Squad, made up of personnel from the sheriff’s office, Washington State Patrol  and Everett Police Department, collected and destroyed the devices, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
