Police investigate shooting in Kent

Update at 3:25 p.m.: Tacoma Police Department spokeswoman Loretta Cool said a 24-year-old woman who claimed to be the suspect in the Kent shooting turned herself in to police headquarters at 1:25 p.m.

Update at 2:48 p.m.: A man and woman were walking into a Starbucks store in Kent this afternoon when the woman shot the man in the head and fled, police said.

The victim has been taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where his condition was not immediately known.

The woman suspected of shooting the man reportedly turned herself in to Tacoma police.

According to Kent police Sgt. T. Lontz, the man and woman were walking into the Starbucks at Southeast 208th Street and 107th Avenue around 12:30 p.m. when she opened fire at least once. Lontz did not know the caliber of the weapon and could not say whether the woman said anything to the man before the shooting.

Police are investigating the motive for the shooting as well as the relationship between the victim and suspect.

Witness Mike Tyler, of Puyallup, said he was in his car looking for shade with the windows down when the shooting occurred a few feet in front of him.

“I was smoking a cigarette and heard a pop. It didn’t sound like a gunshot,” he said.

Tyler got out of the car to help the wounded man. He said the man was holding his left cheek and bleeding. Tyler, a former soldier, told someone to grab towels and gloves as he compressed the wound.

“I kept him talking.”

Tyler said the wounded man told him he was shot by his girlfriend. He didn’t press him for details about his relationship. There were about 10-15 people surrounding after the shooting, offering to help.

Update at 2:01 p.m.: A woman suspected in the shooting has surrendered to Tacoma police.
