SPD: Cellphone use at Torchlight Parade could bog down networks

For people attending Alaska Airlines Seafair Torchlight Parade this Saturday, there will be extra police officers and other public-safety personnel who can help during an emergency, according to a Seattle Police Department blog post.

The post said police are expecting cellular networks to be bogged down during the parade, based on last year’s Torchlight parade and this year’s Seahawks Super Bowl victory parade.

If people are unable to reach the police’s 911 call center, they can talk to any officer who will be working along the parade route, the post said.

Police are recommending parade-goers use texts to communicate with friends and family, and to minimize phone calls and social-media use at the parade.

For more information about this year’s parade, visit Alaska Airlines Seafair Torchlight Parade.
