Spokane: Give panhandlers
‘real change,’ not money

The Associated Press

SPOKANE, Wash. — The city of Spokane is launching a month-long campaign Thursday asking people not to give money to panhandlers.

Instead, the “Give Real Change” program wants to redirect donations to agencies with recovery services that help get panhandlers off the street, such as the Union Gospel Mission, Goodwill and the Salvation Army.

KXLY reports signs are being posted downtown urging people to “Give Real Change.” Residents also will see information about the program in their utility bills.
