125-mph chase on I-5 nets carjack suspect

GRAND MOUND, Thurston County — Thurston County sheriff’s officers say a man accused of threatening a woman with a board, stealing her car and leading deputies on an Interstate 5 chase that reached speeds of 125 mph has been arrested.

Authorities say a woman who left the kitchen door open at her Tumwater home as she prepared to leave for work Monday morning was confronted by a man who threatened her with a 2-foot-long board and demanded her keys. Sheriff’s officers say the man also grabbed cash as the woman screamed for help.

Lt. Cliff Ziesemer says a neighbor armed himself with a pistol and confronted the thief but the man sped off, crashing through a fence and nearly hitting three people.

Spike strips flattened two of the car’s tires near Grand Mound, but the driver kept going at speeds that still hit 100 mph. Deputies finally shoved the car into a cement barrier.

KOMO-TV reports that a 33-year-old Portland man was arrested for investigation of burglary, robbery, assault and eluding police.
