8 rescued in water near Bainbridge Island

Eight people — and one dog — were rescued in the waters Sunday night off Bainbridge Island after their boat capsized.

All had been traveling in a 15-foot boat when they wound up in Puget Sound near Blakely Rock, a reef off the east coast of the island, a spokesman for the U.S. Coast Guard said. The cause of the accident was not immediately known.

People in a nearby 12-foot boat moved in to help and the Coast Guard sent a vessel to pluck the persons safely from the water, the Coast Guard said. The rescued people were brought to Eagle Harbor to be evaluated by medics, the Bainbridge Island Fire Department said via Twitter.
