Accident on Ship Canal Bridge jams traffic on southbound I-5

Update at 11:10 a.m.: The DOT reports the accident on the Ship Canal Bridge has been cleared. All southbound lanes are now open.

Original post: The state Department of Transportation (DOT) is delaying the change in direction on the Interstate 5 express lanes for 30 minutes because of an accident on the Ship Canal Bridge in Seattle.

The accident, which occurred around 10:30 a.m., is blocking the two left lanes, according to the DOT. The express lanes will be switched to handle northbound traffic around 11:30 a.m.

In the meantime, the DOT is recommending that drivers heading south on I-5 toward Seattle use the express lanes because traffic on the main line is backed up about three miles.
