A judge found probable cause Thursday to hold a 25-year-old man for investigation of kidnapping and auto theft after he allegedly stole an SUV with a child inside in West Seattle.
Bail was set at $500,000 for Estevan Lucio Sanchez, who waived his appearance during his bail hearing Thursday at the King County Jail. His next appearance is scheduled for Sept. 2.
Sanchez is accused of stealing a Ford Edge with a 10-month-old baby inside from a convenience-store parking lot in the 1600 block of Southwest Holden Street Wednesday while the baby’s father had gone into the store. As the vehicle was being driven away, the baby’s father yelled that his daughter was inside, police said. He then called 911.
The SUV, with the child inside, was found a short time later parked at Southwest 99th Street and Eighth Avenue Southwest. The baby girl was reunited with her father two minutes after police arrived.
Police arrested the suspect at a White Center restaurant at 4:18 p.m., about an hour after the baby’s father reported the vehicle stolen.
Investigators say they are classifying the incident as a kidnapping because the father had yelled out that his child was in the car.
