PORTLAND — Firefighters have told residents of 70 homes in the Columbia Gorge community of Rowena to evacuate. An additional 100 homes are on notice to be ready to go.
A wildfire began in brush overnight and has spread to timber and scrub oak in weather conditions that have fire bosses worried.
Fire officials say winds of 35 mph to 40 mph are common in the Gorge and expected Wednesday.
The fire is about six miles west of The Dalles, a city of more than 14,000 people.
There were no immediate reports of houses burning in Rowena, an unincorporated place.
Gov. John Kitzhaber has invoked the state’s authority to mobilize local fire departments to protect buildings, and fire crews have come from three counties.
